Supporting Seniors with Dementia: Honoring Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding, sharing resources, and supporting individuals and families affected by dementia. At Alamosa Senior Citizens Inc, we’re proud to honor this month by focusing on one of the key topics featured at our upcoming Celebrating Aging Conference: dementia support for seniors, caregivers, and our community.

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) serving seniors 50+ across Alamosa and the San Luis Valley, our mission is to provide meaningful senior community support, strengthen elderly social connection, and help older adults maintain senior independence and dignity. Understanding dementia—and learning how to better support those living with it—is an important part of that work.

Understanding Dementia in Our Community

Dementia affects memory, thinking, and behavior in ways that can be challenging for both seniors and their loved ones. While Alzheimer’s is the most common form, there are many types of dementia—and each person's experience is unique. At the Alamosa Senior Center, we see firsthand how community connection, compassion, and access to resources can make a tremendous difference in quality of life.

How Our Center Supports Seniors with Dementia

We offer a wide range of senior enrichment programs, activities, and supportive services designed to promote engagement, confidence, and joy. These include:

  • Social activities for seniors that encourage connection and reduce isolation.
  • Wellness classes for seniors, such as chair yoga and Qi gong for older adults , which support overall brain and body health.
  • Senior nutrition services and our senior meals program, providing nutritious meals for elderly community members.
  • Senior crafts and hobby groups that stimulate creativity and cognitive engagement.

Our goal is to create a supportive environment where seniors living with dementia—and their caregivers—feel seen, understood, and empowered. Through aging‑in‑place support and senior health services, we help ensure families don't navigate these challenges alone.

Dementia Support at the Celebrating Aging Conference

This past May, our Celebrating Aging Conference featured sessions dedicated to dementia education and caregiver support. Attendees learnt about:

  • Early signs and symptoms of dementia
  • Communication strategies that support dignity and respect
  • Brain‑healthy habits and lifestyle approaches
  • Resources available in Alamosa and the San Luis Valley

Whether you’re a caregiver, a family member, a senior navigating memory changes, or a community partner, these conversations offer valuable tools for strengthening understanding and compassion.

Honoring Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

Throughout June, we encourage our community to wear purple, learn more about brain health, and reach out to loved ones who may be affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Small acts of support can make an enormous impact—and together, we can help build a more connected and caring San Luis Valley.

At Alamosa Senior Citizens Inc, we remain committed to offering affordable senior services, senior educational programs, and elderly social inclusion opportunities that uplift seniors and their families. We hope you’ll join us this month—and at our upcoming conference—as we continue Celebrating Aging with knowledge, compassion, and community.
