Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate in programs at the Alamosa Senior Center?
All adults aged 50 and older are welcome to participate in our programs and services. Membership is encouraged but not required. Whether you’re a longtime resident of Alamosa or new to the San Luis Valley, we invite you to stop by, join an activity, and become part of our welcoming community.
Do I have to be a member to join classes or attend events?
No membership is required to enjoy our programs. While members receive certain benefits and help sustain our mission, all of our services—including fitness classes, lunches, and social events—are open to any senior in the San Luis Valley.
How much do activities cost?
Many of our programs are free thanks to community support, volunteers, and grant funding. Some classes may have a small suggested donation or fee to help cover supplies or instruction. Our goal is to keep all services affordable and accessible.
What kinds of fitness classes are offered?
We offer a variety of low-impact movement classes designed for older adults, including Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Strong Bones, and Line Dancing. These classes help with flexibility, balance, and strength—all in a friendly, judgment-free environment.
Is lunch served every day?
Yes! We serve hot, nutritious lunches Monday through Friday. Our meals include balanced portions of protein, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are often available. It’s not just a meal—it’s a chance to connect and socialize.
How do I reserve a lunch or see the menu?
You can view our lunch menu in advance on our bulletin board, Facebook group, or by calling our office. Reservations are not required, but we encourage early arrival as seating is limited. A suggested donation is welcomed to support our meal program.
Can I volunteer even if I’m not a senior?
Absolutely. Volunteers of all ages are welcome! We have opportunities for individuals, families, student groups, and service organizations. Whether you’re helping in the kitchen, leading a craft, or assisting with events, your time makes a difference.
What kinds of volunteer roles are available?
We have volunteer roles for every interest and skillset. You can help serve meals, greet guests, assist with events, lead a hobby group, or offer tech help to seniors. You can also contribute behind the scenes with outreach, office help, or fundraising support.
How are donations used?
Donations help fund daily operations, including meals, transportation assistance, fitness classes, wellness workshops, and outreach to isolated seniors. About 40% of our funding comes from government support, but donations fill essential gaps and allow us to grow.
Can I donate in honor of someone?
Yes, we welcome tribute gifts in honor or memory of a loved one. You can also sponsor a meal, a class, or a special event in someone’s name. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate a legacy while directly benefiting our local seniors.
Does the center offer transportation services?
Yes, we offer limited transportation for medical appointments, grocery trips, and essential errands. Service is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is focused on supporting seniors who may not otherwise have access to transportation.
Are there programs for rural or homebound seniors?
We do our best to reach seniors in remote areas through home-delivered meals, phone check-ins, and partnerships with other local agencies. We are always looking for new ways to expand outreach and reduce isolation for those living outside Alamosa.
What makes the Alamosa Senior Center different?
We’re more than a building—we’re a home away from home. We serve the whole person through wellness, nutrition, socialization, and education. Our team knows our members by name and listens to their needs. Everything we do is rooted in dignity and community.
How do I join or renew my membership?
You can sign up for membership in person at the front desk. Membership is open to anyone aged 50 or older and includes access to additional resources, early event notices, and a deeper connection to our mission. Annual dues help keep our center thriving.
Are there special events or trips offered?
Yes! We host seasonal celebrations, guest speaker events, live music, and occasional day trips and out-of-valley excursions. Our calendar is always full of opportunities to learn, laugh, and make new memories with friends.
Can I rent the senior center for a private event?
We do occasionally allow use of the center for community or senior-focused gatherings, based on availability. Please contact us directly for rental inquiries, guidelines, and scheduling.
What are the center’s hours of operation?
We are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch is typically served around noon, and most fitness and social activities take place in the morning or early afternoon. Check our calendar for the latest schedule.
Where can I find the monthly activity calendar?
Our activity calendar is posted in the center, shared in our Facebook group, and available by phone upon request. We’re currently working on making it accessible directly from our website.
How is the center funded?
Our funding comes from a mix of sources: local and county contracts, foundation grants, program fees, memberships, and community donations. We operate on a modest annual budget and rely heavily on volunteers and in-kind support to keep costs low.
How can I stay informed about news and updates?
You can follow us on Facebook, sign up for email newsletters, or stop by the center to view our monthly bulletin. We also share updates through local media and community partners across the San Luis Valley.
